The 2024 vintage: brilliance born of adversity<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Years ending in 4 have always had the reputation of being challenging for winemakers, and 2024 proved to be no exception. The vineyards of France suffered unpredictable weather conditions, testing the patience and the skills of those whose noble job it is to care for the vines. However, in spite of much uncertainty and many gloomy predictions, this vintage stands today as a brilliant testimony to Man\u2019s resilience and adaptability in the face of Nature.<\/p>

It was accumulated experience, acquired over many decades, that was the key to the 2024 vintage. We adjusted our approach in response to the vagaries of the climate, reinforcing our care in the vines and our attention in our winemaking. It was this fragile equilibrium between ancestral skills and modern techniques that enabled uncertainty to be transformed into unexpected success.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A CONSTANTLY SHIFTING SKY<\/h2>

2024 figures amongst the top three wettest years since 1997. Although the average temperature for the year was distinctly higher than in 2021, it was nevertheless lower than the last two vintages which remain the highest recorded to date. The mild winter temperatures encouraged early development in the vines but also, combined with the wet conditions, the rapid spread of mildew of rare intensity.
The summer was dry and punctuated by two heatwaves, one at the end of July and one at the beginning of August, but these had no impact on the aromatic development of the grapes. However, the rain had still not said its last word, making a notable comeback in September.<\/p>

Budbreak occurred slightly earlier than average, with fewer bunches than usual, but the exceptionally cool temperatures in May meant that flowering started at a date nearer to the norm. These conditions, combined with high ambient humidity, were not without consequence for flowering, where we observed high levels of flower shatter, particularly in the Merlots. The summer was quite dry with temperatures within the average range, but cooler than the previous two vintages, which caused colour change to occur a week later than average.<\/p>

HARVEST CONDITIONS : FRAYED NERVES<\/h2>

The harvest date is determined on an individual plot-by-plot basis. It is probably the decision that has the single most impact on the final quality of the grapes that we bring into the cellar, and it is one that is not to be taken lightly. It represents one of our most valuable skills. Picking began on 24th September with the Merlots: they were all safely in the cellar by 28th September.<\/p>

Harvesting of the Cabernet Sauvignons began in earnest on 30th September, with the return of the sun. Leaving them on the bush for just a few extra hours makes all the difference so, as we taste the berries in the plots every morning, we consider how we can push to the limit but never past the point of no return. Fulfilling this honourable ambition requires rigorous, uncompromising sorting, which meant that
in 2024 up to 10% of the harvest was eliminated! Losing volume to retain only the purest of the fruit is the price we have to pay.<\/p>

The total yield was extremely low, at around 26 hl\/ha. But it was for the greater good, as in climate conditions such as we experienced in 2024 it is easier for a vine to bring a smaller number of bunches to full maturity. In all, harvesting took 14 days, and finished on 8th October.<\/p>

IN THE CELLARS : NO COMPROMISE<\/h2>

A sorting line as efficient as ours is more than just a simple tool, in a year like 2024 it is an absolute necessity and a tremendous asset.
We have chosen to adopt gentle winemaking methods to obtain velvety tannins, smoothness and harmony in our wines. Achieving balance was essential to compensate for higher acidity levels this year, due to the vintage\u2019s weather conditions.<\/p>

Sugar levels were not very high, due to the increase in size of the Merlot berries in September, so we opted for concentration. We were not going to allow reduced quantities to get in the way of our quality objectives. We had to lose a little more volume to obtain greater density and richness in our wines. Paradoxically, the Cabernet bunches were unusually lightweight compared to the Merlots, which bodes well for our blends !<\/p>

CABERNET SAUVIGNON : A SELF EVIDENCE CHOICE<\/h2>

Blending began on 3rd January 2025. As in 2023, we were agreeably surprised by the general homogeneity of the batches. The Cabernet Sauvignons really shone this year, which came as no surprise to us given their relatively small berry size. As a result, a high proportion went into the Chateau Lagrange blend (84%). On the other hand, the plumper berried Merlots finally remained less convincing than usual, despite all efforts at concentration, and made up only 10% of the blend which is the smallest ever proportion of Merlot in a Lagrange wine. The Petit Verdot played its role of supporting actor to perfection, bringing colour, structure, and mid-palate volume, plus very pronounced peppery notes this year.<\/p>

It was the perfect finishing touch! The press wines were extremely elegant and made up the remaining 11% of the blend. They bring richness to the middle palate, good length, and also add an extra dimension to this vintage. Particularly attentive work in the vines, stringent sorting, and bespoke winemaking enabled us to accomplish the feat of creating a Grand Vin that is subtle and beautifully harmonious with silky tannins, that also offers a wide drinking window.<\/p>

This vintage is a reminder that viticulture is also the art of resilience. It is an alchemy that is created between Man and Nature. And if years ending in 4 have the reputation of being complex, they also have the potential to produce transcendent wines that overcome adversity to capture the essence of a singular vintage. 2024 continues in this tradition, offering us wines that embrace both the classicism of Bordeaux and the technological advances of the last decade. This is a vintage to savour, but above all to celebrate, like an ode to perseverance and human ingenuity.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
