Château Lagrange

Lagrange_2022

THE VINTAGE

The vines’ impressive resilience on the property’s gravelly terroirs was not even pushed to its limit by the unique weather conditions of 2022! Once again, we have proof that the vine plants possess the necessary resources to face challenging, sometimes extreme, weather conditions. The cool, refreshing nights had a buffer effect on the extraordinarily high daytime temperatures in this the hottest ever vintage on record in Bordeaux. The grapes were quite unique, small, concentrated and ripe with a disconcerting acidity. We harvested little but great ! We are privileged to be able to write some of the most remarkable pages of the Domaine’s history: the fact is that Bordeaux has probably produced the greatest vintage of the last fifty years.

TASTING NOTE

The Merlots are magnificent, but it is the Cabernet Sauvignons that dominate, coming in at a new estate record of 86 % in the blend. They combine density, freshness and length: the signature of the very top Médoc vintages. We delight in the blackcurrant, morello cherry and liquorice notes.  The 12% of Merlots represents, on the contrary, a record low proportion at Lagrange. The 2% of Petit Verdots completes the mid-palate with pear and black pepper aromas. A strict selection has been performed again this year, with only 40% of Château Lagrange grand vin in this exceptional vintage. The unquestionable quality of this 2022 vintage is as high as the yield is low, we even harvested a little less than in 2021. Everything is there in this wine, nothing out of place, like a perfectly round sphere, dense, velvety and vibrant, the ultimate harmony.

chateau-Lagrange_2021

THE VINTAGE

The total rainfall of recorded in 2021 was lower than the average of the past 25 years. It is interesting to note that temperatures remained cool throughout the growth cycle, a vital element for maintaining balance in the wines. The preparatory vine care during June and July allowed the grapes to reap full benefit from the sun’s rays. The first baskets of Merlot were picked on 27th September with an uncertain weather but the Indian summer began on 4th October : it was the day when everything changed, the turning point. We decided to take our time and to suspend the picking for 2 days. It was a risky decision but a necessary one if we were to harvest great Cabernets! We finish the harvest on th 12th October, we observed the grapes developing every day, progressively more concentrated, losing up to 30% in weight, the tannins and skins becoming finer, revealing promising aromas. The balance and harmony of the 2021 vintage reminds us somewhat of the wines produced in the 2000s, with a higher quality in the tannic framework and the aromatic precision. Like a window open onto the past, the 2021 will be our neo-retro vintage par excellence !

TASTING NOTE

Dark red colour with a crimson tint. Aromatic notes of red fruit, such as strawberry or raspberry. The attack is supple and fleshy. With 84% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, the tannic structure is powerful yet elegant. The harmony that reigns throughout promises a large drinking window.

chateau-Lagrange_2020

THE VINTAGE

2020, a unique year in so many ways, will forever remain in our memories. Our work routines were upset by the pandemic and our capacity to adapt to the situation, and stay on track, was essential both for the property and the staff. As in 2019, we had record annual rainfall. The mild winter provoked an early budburst and this advance continued right through to the harvest. The grapes were small, with skins rich in polyphenols. The Merlots are magnificent, boasting an opulence accentuated by the historically low yields. The decision was made to stop for 4 days before picking the Cabernets, to allow the tannins and aromas to develop to perfection : this variety brings power, freshness and length to the wines.

TASTING NOTE

The 2020 is a vintage of contrasts, a vine grower’s vintage. We harvested the smallest crop in 30 years. The extraordinary freshness in this wine, produced in the hottest vintage in modern history, is real proof of the buffer effect of our terroir. The precision of the fruit transpires, with lovely notes of black cherry, blackcurrant and liquorice. The tense tannic structure is reminiscent of the great 2010, with a more creamy, smoother mid-palate. A truly classic vintage that will be enjoyable earlier yet maintain a remarkable ageing potential. A focused, finely tuned, expressive wine showing great purity.

Lagrange_2019

THE VINTAGE

2019, just like 2018, will be remembered for its really contrasting weather. We had a cold, wet spring, and then a dry, hot summer with recordbreaking sunshine ! This was the longest harvest we had ever seen. The berry weight was the lowest of the last 36 years at Lagrange. We took a gamble stopping for a while between the Merlot and the Cabernet, judging the latter’s phenolic maturity not in adequacy with its technological maturity. It was important not to rush, tasting the grapes daily as the skins became gradually thinner and aromas were progressively revealed: we harvested the richest grapes in the domaine’s modern history.

TASTING NOTE

The character of our unique terroir and our technical team’s expertise have allowed this vintage to surpass itself. It boasts both phenolic richness and freshness in the fruit. This is a powerful, creamy, smooth wine. With a record 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Lagrange 2019 blend will go down in history. The expressive, aromatic nose opens with black cherry, blackcurrant and liquorice. In the palate, the entry is silky and plump with powerful, velvety tannins. This distinguished and elegant 2019 will take its place among our iconic vintages. The ageing potential is simply remarkable !

REVIEWS

Neal Martin 94-96

“Quite a streamlined Lagrange in the context of a warm growing season, this feels agile and nimble on the finish. Excellent.”

Jane Anson 95

“Just enormously elegant, with tons of St Julien balance, and fine tannins that are sure to take it through the next few decades with ease. I love this wine, one of the most enjoyable of the vintage in St Julien, with a strikingly seductive texture. “

Lagrange_2018

THE VINTAGE

In 2018 the total rainfall was above the average of the last two decades, mainly due to the heavy rainfall in the first half of the year. The average temperatures were also among the highest ever recorded by our weather station. The summer was, however, one of the driest recorded at Lagrange since 1996.

TASTING NOTE

Dark color with purple tint on the rim, black cherry, blackcurrant and fresh prune. Powerful and unctuous with a lot of freshness. This vintage seems to be very approachable and well balanced. Tannins are dense and very silky. This amazing wine looks like a blend between the 2009 and the 2016. 2018 is the ultimate generous wine.

REVIEWS

Lisa Perrotti-Brown 93 – 95+

“Full-bodied and jam-packed with black fruits and earthy accents, it has a solid frame of firm, chunky tannins and just enough freshness.”

James Molesworth 93 – 96

“Vivid from start to finish.”

Lagrange_2017

THE VINTAGE

2017 was early and contrasted. The total rainfall is lower than the average of the last twenty years. The month of April was particularly dry. The cool nights culminated in severe frost on the 27th April. Spring was warm with average rainfall. Flowering occurred early, quickly and in ideal conditions. The summer was warm and dry until September 8th. A tremendous work carried out to mark 250 000 vine stocks during colour change made the intraplot selection process easier at harvesttime.

TASTING NOTE

Ruby color with purple reflects. On the nose, some notes of black cherry, licorice and blackcurrant appear. The mouthfeel is silky and unctuous with a lot of freshness. This vintage features an early drinkability. Tannins are soft and well integrated. A really harmonious wine which reminds us the style of 2012 and 2015 vintages. It embodies the elegance of Saint-Julien wines.

REVIEWS

Lisa Perrotti-Brown 93

“The palate is elegantly played with plush tannins and an impressive intensity of crunchy black fruits, finishing with great length and plenty of depth.”

Roger Voss 94

“Balanced and stylish, this wine conveys the elegant side of Saint-Julien.”

This Fiefs de Lagrange which represents 60 % of the total production, is made from vines that are 30 years old. The Cabernet Sauvignons are back in force, exceptional in this vintage, with 48 % in the blend. They are joined by 41 % of Merlot and a significant 11 % of Petit Verdots. The 2022 will impress with its power and creaminess, offering superb aromas of black and red fruit.  The structure is dense and velvety. This Fiefs 2022 is surprisingly accessible yet built to last over several decades.

The colour is a brilliant bright red. Nice tangy aromas of redcurrant and blackcurrant. Produced from vines that are on average 30 years old, Les Fiefs de Lagrange boasts a beautifully coated dense tannic framework. TASTING NOTE

Produced from vines on average 30 years old, and with the clear intention of offering so much more than a ‘second wine’, Les Fiefs de Lagrange is always one of the best value Saint Julien wines. The 2020 is no exception. A true reflection of the appellation’s elegant and harmonious style, this vintage will be enjoyable almost immediately. As in the Château Lagrange Grand Vin, black and red fruit aromas predominate. The tangy fresh entry is followed by an ample midpalate and a nice long finish. All the ingredients are there to allow an excellent ageing in the cellar for the more patient wine lovers too.

Les arums de lagrange

Arums_2022

THE VINTAGE

The exceptional weather conditions of this 2022 vintage allowed us to harvest very concentrated Sauvignon Blancs with gorgeous tropical fruit aromas. As for the Sémillons, they showed great amplitude. The happy location of our white grape vines on the coolest areas of the estate ensured that we maintained the freshness so essential to the balance in our white wines. The clay-limestone subsoil of our numerous plots had a buffer effect, bringing the plants the water they needed, thus avoiding any negative hydric stress.

TASTING NOTE

Freshness and complexity are the key words for this 2022 vintage that combines the estate’s three white grape varieties. On the nose, delicate notes of citrus, peach, pineapple and mango mingle with subtle floral and aniseed aromas. The palate is generous and creamy, with just the necessary acidity, brought by the Sauvignon Blancs, to ensure balance and a subtle harmony in this Arums de Lagrange 2022.

The preparatory vine care during June and July allowed the grapes to reap full benefit from the sun’s rays. The first baskets of Sauvignons Blancs were picked on 8th September and the harvest end on 24th September with the Semillons. We have taken the time and harvested only in the morning when the temperatures are still fresh, to preserve the aromatic potential of the grapes. The weather conditions of the vintage have been extremely positive for the elaboration of a great white wine. Provided with a remarkable freshness, this wine shows a beautiful aromatic complexity, dominated by the Sauvignons.

TASTING NOTE

A pale, slightly golden robe. The nose is characterised by citrus notes such as lemon, orange peel or grapefruit. The palate is nice and fresh, supported by a pleasant acidity and a slight creaminess due to the barrel ageing. A real treat for the tastebuds, a wine to be enjoyed in its youth.

Our work routines were upset by the pandemic and our capacity to adapt to the situation, and stay on track, was essential both for the property and the staff. As in 2019, we had record annual rainfall. The mild winter provoked an early budburst. The flowering was ten days early and took place in excellent conditions. The dry summer season and the high temperatures allowed the grapes to develop more rapidly. This advance continued right through to the harvest, of which cool nights allowed to maintain a freshness necessary in the making of our white wines.

TASTING NOTE

With its pretty pale yellow robe, this Arums de Lagrange first offers intense aromas on the nose, with tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus and white peach. The attack is lively, with a generous midpalate, and a pleasant roundness in the mouth, thanks to the ageing on lees and the 17% of Sémillon that was especially good in 2020. Tangy and beautifully balanced, this wine is ready to drink for those who enjoy fresh fruit sensations. It should continue to delight our palates up until 2026.

Arums_2019

THE VINTAGE

2019, like 2018, will be remembered as a vintage of contrasts. The wet, cold spring was followed by a dry, hot summer and record sunshine ! These weather conditions brought lower weight and great concentration in the grapes but to the detriment of quantity. The yield at a little under 25 hl/ha was the smallest crop ever recorded on the property. The harvest days were very sunny but the nights remained cool. Once again our unique terroirs were able to maintain the great freshness necessary in the making of our Arums de Lagrange.

TASTING NOTE

We chose not to include the Sauvignon Gris in the blend to preserve the appropriate freshness in this hot vintage. The nose is explosive, with aromas of citrus, lemon and pineapple. In the palate, the attack is lively, following through to a plump, generous midpalate. This is an elegant, harmonious wine boasting a remarkably long finish. There is a relatively tight drinking window if we wish to enjoy the large palette of fruity aromas to the full.

FleursDuLac_2018

THE VINTAGE

The spring was rainy and the summer very dry. 2018 is one of the warmer vintage we have ever had. The low temperatures during the night maintain a good level of acidity to keep the freshness of the flavor of Les Arums de Lagrange.

A great aromatic complexity, notes of citrus, pineapple, peach and mango. The 2018 Arums will surprise you with its richness and volume in the mouth supported by a nice acidity

TASTING NOTE

This hot, dry vintage brought such an extraordinary concentration in the grapes that the yield was a mere 37hl/ha. This phenomenon was especially true for the Cabernet Sauvignon, explaining the unusually high proportion of Merlot in the blend this year. Our Cabernets provide the backbone and freshness in this wine that offers pleasant aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and liquorice. The generous presence of the Merlot brings volume, smoothness and balance to the whole, promising a longer drinking window. The key word in this very attractive vintage is Harmony.

Haut-Medoc_2016

THE VINTAGE

The rainy spring weather encouraged the budburst although we cannot say this was an early vintage. The flowering took place the driest week of the spring. 2016 was one of the hottest and driest summers ever! The harvest was late and long.

TASTING NOTE

A shiny and rubyred colour, with good intensity. Aromatic and attractive nose revealing fresh berryfruits, redcurrent, and cherry. Hints of cloves, honey gingerbread and menthol conferring a complexity and character to the wine. In mouth, the attack is silky and fresh with supple tannins. 2016 is the most complex vintage we have ever produce. A genuine charming wine brought by crispy redfruits aromas and grilled hazelnuts on the finish.
